The Thin Line

The Thin Line is a 5 part series of programmes dealing with the themes of depression and suicide as well as the supports available to sufferers and victims of both. The series aims to increase awareness of issues related to suicide and to promote a healthy discussion about this difficult subject.

The series will begin on Claremorris Community Radio on Saturday 12th of November at 2pm. It will then be broadcast over the next four Saturdays.

Programme One

The first programme of the series focuses on the story of a young man who attempted to take his own life. This young man frankly discusses the issue of depression in his life, the consequence of his depressed state and how he now manages the condition.

 

Programme Two

Dr. Pradeep Chadha, Dr. of Psychiatry and a Psychotherapist is Janet's guest on the second programme of The Thin Line. On this programme Dr. Chadha discusses the factors relating to suicide such as, conditioning, bonding, communication, releasing of emotions, responsibility, assistance available to people in need and advice to the survivor of suicide, the bereaved.


 

Programme Three

This programme allows us to hear and share the story of a sister who lost her brother to suicide, the affects it had on her and how she came to terms with her heartbreak. Also on the programme are representatives of support organisations, 1LIFE, AWARE, SAMARITANS, BODYWHYS and BELONG2 each outlining the services offered by their organization.

 

 

Programme Four

Guests on this edition of The Thin Line include: Sr. Juliette Walsh, Family Therapist and Suicide Counsellor at Cúram, Claremorris, Ger Heverin, former Guidance Counseller in an all boys secondary school and Michelle Kearns, Student Counsellor at GMIT Castlebar. Issues discussed include emotional health, risk factors for suicide, self -harm, suicidal thoughts, responding to the distressed person, support for the distresssed and the survivor of suicide.

 

Programme Five

In the final programme of the series Janet's guest is the friend of a victim of suicide. He shares with us the shock, disbelief and heartbreak he suffered and also the coping strategies he uses to ease his pain. Sr. Juliette Walsh discussses the services provided by Cúram, Claremorris. The programme ends with a poem written by local lady Antoinette Keane.

 

The series was produced and presented by Janet Corbin Hinchion with technical and production assistance from Gordon Campbell.
