Muthale Hospital Home Care Programme

In a 10 sq. mile radius there are 1,573 orphans and their guardians enlisted in the Home Care Programme which is run by THREE social workers. This is not the total number of orphans in the area and most of whom are HIV positive. Services provided include, health care and education, home visits, nutritional support, legal protection, assistance with school fees and counselling and psychological support. My involvement there was and will be one of facilitation of psychological services as well as home visits to assist and support families with their needs. Their domestic conditions are sometimes shocking and the level of poverty suffered does not lend itself to enhancing their self-worth or self- esteem.
Just before I returned home news came that salaries for TWO of the social workers would not be paid during 2010 BUT lo and behold I had a text message one morning from a friend to say that she had lodged money into the charity a/c and that actually saved the day and the programme from collapse. The staff are now paid up until June 2010 thanks to the generosity of people which cost €1,200.
