The Youth Centre in Tulia.
104 female Kenyan students given the chance to be educated in the Catholic
Youth Centre, Tulia, students who would have educationally lost out
previously due to poverty and social attitude. Thanks to the kindness
and generosity of people is possible to re-introduce the girls to education
and empowerment.
This residential school is nothing like ours in Ireland, it is basic
--very basic, no laminated pictures on the walls, no comfortable chairs
--simply stools , chalk is in short supply as are copies, pencils, pens.
Core subjects Maths, English are not available but thanks to Claremorris
money there is a change.
During my time there last Oct to December it was possible to provided
school supplies , water tanks, roof guttering and a multi-purpose room
consisting of 2 class rooms, a dining hall and study /recreational area.
You also cared for the environment by planting about 350 trees in the
compound, fruit bearing and indigenous trees. A teacher of English and
Maths has been employed for this academic year and the diet of the girls
has been improved by supplying meat ONCE a week and milk THREE times
a week. All this was possible because of the generosity of the people
of Claremorris and the surrounding areas who donated money through The
Good Friday Walk and the Tiny Tots Disco. I spent in region of €6,500
and also worked with the students facilitating their learning of English,
Maths and Business.
What a pleasure it was to spend time with such a wonderful group of
girls aged between 16 and 22 who now have the opportunity to return
to school and empower themselves.
